Acoustic duo to play at Hard Luck Cafe

Acoustic duo The Levins and Long Island’s own Christine Sweeney will share the bill during the monthly Hard Luck Café series at the Cinema Arts Centre on Thursday, June 15.

The 8:30 p.m. concert in the Cinema’s Sky Room will be preceded by an open mic at 7:30 p.m.

The Levins are a New York-based, harmony driven acoustic folk-rock duo who seek to make the world a happier place through their warm, spirited and uplifting music without skating over the complexities of life.

Ira and Julia Levin are singer-songwriters who perform their original material with guitar and piano accompaniment, using unexpected harmonies and musical arrangements that make their songs both engaging and infectious.

Says WFUV’s John Platt: “The Levins speak to our better selves with their crystalline harmonies and uplifting lyrics.”

The duo had a coveted Formal Showcase at the 2016 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference, and won the 2011 Connecticut Folk Festival Songwriting Contest.

Sweeney is a young, blues-pop musician and singer-songwriter who has been active on the Long Island music scene for a decade.

With a voice as powerful as it is sweet, she deftly handles playful without sacrificing genuine emotion.

Her writing style is focused heavily on the feel of the lyrics, but the underlying music structure reveals that she’s no stranger to complexities in harmonies as well.

Sweeney cites Joni Mitchell, Regina Spektor, John Mayer, Rilo Kelly and KT Tunstall among her influences.

Her sometimes gritty vocals soar over her rhythmic guitar playing.

Tickets to the event are $15 ($10 for Cinema Arts Centre and Folk Music Society of Huntington members) and will be available at the door.

The Cinema Arts Centre is located at 423 Park Ave. in Huntington.
