The fifth season of Stephen C. Widom Cultural Arts at Emanuel continues on Sunday, May 7 at 3 with Felix Mendelssohn’s “Elijah,” performed by the Mineola Choral Society Chorus & Orchestra, Thomas W. Jones, conductor.

First performed in August of 1846, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s “Elijah”
is one of the great works for chorus, soloists, and orchestra.

In “Elijah,” Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote a work that pays tribute to the oratorios of Handel and the extended works of Bach, conceived in the lyrical and romantic style of Mendelssohn’s day.

Taking full advantage of the dramatic opportunities that the prophet Elijah’s story provides, he presents a work of fierce dramatic impact and conveys his interpretation in the emotion, power and intensity of his music, sometimes expressing deep tenderness and love and other times evoking images of violent fire, flood and whirlwind.

This season, the Mineola Choral Society celebrates 69 years of presenting the highest quality choral music to Long Island communities.

Conductor Thomas W. Jones joined the Mineola Choral Society in 2006.

He is also conductor of the Huntington Men’s Chorus and the Stone House Singers, a chamber choir in Park Slope.

The 65-voice chorus rehearses classical choral repertoire, as well as fine modern works in a friendly, congenial and dynamic atmosphere of shared music-making, and conveys that experience in concerts with professional soloists and orchestra for the joy and enrichment of its audiences.

Tickets for the event are $20 or two for $35.
