The Gold Coast International Film Festival will kick off the second installment of it’s 4th Annual Elliman Film Series with “The Man Who Saved the World,” on Tuesday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m.

The film tells the story of Stanislav Petrov, a retired Soviet military officer who prevented the start of a worldwide nuclear war.

On Sept. 26, 1983, the Soviet’s early warning satellite system reported that American missiles were heading their way.

But Petrov, the duty officer that night, correctly suspected that the system was malfunctioning and convinced his superiors to delay a counter attack until further confirmation, thus saving the world from nuclear Armageddon.

This gripping true story of the man who single-handedly averted a nuclear world war mixes fact and fiction by intertwining historical reenactments with real-life footage of Petrov as he tries to get his life back on track.

The film stars Robert De Niro, Matt Damon and Kevin Costner.

The screening will take place at Soundview Cinemas located at 7 Soundview Marketplace in Port Washington and be followed by a special Q&A with Executive Producers Raphael Avigdor, Christian Bruun and Mark Romeo.
