New Art League photo exhibition takes a look at ‘The Long Island Life’

The Island Now

The Art League of Long Island’s juried exhibition “The Long Island Life” asked photographers to capture the essence of what living on Long Island meant to them.

In this competitive exhibition, juror Neill Scholl selected 60 photos out of 366 images submitted.

The exhibit will be on view in the Art League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery July 2 through July 24.  The artists’ reception takes place Sunday, July 10 from 1 to 3 p.m.

On Thursday, July 14 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in a lecture by Neill Scholl titled “Photography as DNA Art: Driven to Record”, the juror will discuss his work and the work of historical LI photographer Hal Fullerton.  The lecture is free and open to the public.

Scholl first became interested in photography as a teenager in the 1940s.

His early work, produced during the 1950s and ‘60s, focused on New York City and its environs, often transforming the geometry of the viewed setting into formal abstraction.

After moving to Long Island, Scholl began to concentrate on landscape photography, revealing a strong commitment to the environment and concern with suburbanization and human encroachment on the natural wilderness.

His work is included in the permanent collection of the Heckscher Museum in Huntington.

In addition to his work as an artist, Scholl has promoted the arts in numerous other ways.

Most recently, he partnered with the Suffolk County Historical Society to recover and restore the glass plate negatives of early 20th-century Long Island photographer Hal B. Fullerton. As a result of these efforts, the Heckscher Museum exhibited thirty-two of Fullerton’s works from April to August of 2013.

Scholl curated, together with Peter Dicke, “Fullerton’s Long Island; The Lure of the Land,” currently on exhibit and featuring 70 large prints of Fullerton photographs in the Grand Staas Gallery of the Suffolk County Historical Society.

The Art League of Long Island is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills.

The gallery is open to the public, free of charge, Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on weekends 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
