Conrad Singer, Nassau Family Court judge and former Village Justice for Great Neck Plaza, was elected Presiding Member of the New York State Bar Association‘s Judicial Section.
The election to Presiding Member of the NYSBA’s Judicial Section is a step up for Singer.
He was a member of the NYSBA since 1997 and served as the Judicial Section’s assistant presiding chair since June 2016, where he was the co-chair of the diversity committee.
“I feel very honored and look forward to it,” Singer said.
In his time on the committee, it has become more representative of the general population, initiated continuing education programs for judges and dealt with issues specific to the judiciary. As Presiding Officer, Singer said, he hopes to increase the participation of judges among the state, continue education programs and improve the general morale of the judiciary.
The NYBSA, not to be confused with the New York State Bar, is a voluntary bar association whose stated goals are to cultivate the science of jurisprudence, promote reform in law, elevate standards in the legal profession and facilitate the administration of justice. With 72,000 members, it’s the largest organization of its kind in the country.
The Judicial Section is a relatively small, but important part of it.
“There are 410 members in the section and they represent judges from every level of the judiciary,” said Patricia Wood, the liaison for the Judiciary Section. Among its responsibilities, she added, are coordinating the Council of Judicial Associations, exchanging legal ideas and providing informational resources.
Singer will officially succeed State Supreme Court Judge Marsha Steinhardt as the presiding officer on June 1.
“I have no doubt that Conrad [Singer] is going to do an excellent job as presiding officer and that he’s going to take our Section to bigger and better and newer heights,” Steinhardt said.
Singer was a Great Neck Plaza village justice from 2000 to 2006 and first elected as a family court judge in 2007. His work earned him the 2013 New York State Family Court Judge of the Year Award.
He was also the managing attorney for his Great Neck law firm from 1995-2006 and Chief of the Vigilant Fire Company from 2000-2004.
Singer is currently serving a third term as president of the New York State Family Court Judges Association and working as an acting New York State Supreme Court justice.
