Steven Leventhal, a lawyer from Roslyn who is the village attorney of Manorhaven, will be sworn in as the president of the Nassau County Bar Association next week.
Leventhal was elected last year and has served as the bar association’s president-elect since May 2016, after serving as the secretary, treasurer, second vice president and first vice president.
A managing member of the Roslyn general practice firm Leventhal, Mullaney & Blinkoff LLP, he is a 20-year member of the Nassau County Bar Association, the largest suburban bar association in the country.
“I am a better lawyer today because I have been part of the bar association,” Leventhal said.
As president, Leventhal said he plans to lead the bar in adapting to changes that have been brought by developments in technology, demographics in the community and the aging of the baby boomers and younger lawyers entering the profession.
“The bar association does many wonderful things,” he said. “It provides desperately needed free legal service to members of the community, has hosted over 100 mortgage disclosure clinics in the past five years, as well as storm recovery clinics, especially following Superstorm Sandy, and landlord/tenant and matrimonial clinics.”
Leventhal said the bar association “is a very meaningful, important and available association,” and the camaraderie, interaction and networking have been educational and rewarding to him.
In addition to being the village attorney in Manorhaven, Leventhal serves as village attorney in Muttontown and is the associate village justice in the villages of Massapequa Park and Lattingtown.
Leventhal is considered an expert in government ethics, having served as the chair of the Nassau County Board of Ethics, and is the counsel to the Board of Ethics for Nassau and Westchester counties, the towns of Oyster Bay, Huntington and Southampton and the Village of Sag Harbor.
He is also the co-chair of the Ethics Committee of the New York State Bar Association Local and State Government Law Section, and served as a member of the state bar association’s Task Force on Local Government Ethics.
Leventhal focuses his law practice on municipal affairs, government and professional ethics, banking and financial services, trusts and estates, business relations and real property.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Long Island University’s School of Professional Accounting and his J.D. from New York University School of Law.
In 2006, he received the Nassau County Bar Association’s Director’s Award “for his tireless work to advance the goals of the association and enhance the practice of law in Nassau County,” a news release said.
Leventhal is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Local and State Government Law Section of the State Bar Association, and a member of the Committee on Standards of Attorney Conduct.
Elena Karabatos, a partner at Schlissel, Ostrow, Karabatos PLLC in Garden City, will be sworn in as president-elect; Richard D. (Rick) Collins, a partner at Collins, Gann, McCloskey & Barry PLLC in Mineola, will be sworn in as vice president; Dorian R. Glover of the Law Office of Dorian R. Glover in Garden City will be sworn in as treasurer; and Gregory S. Lisi, a partner at Forchelli, Curto, Deegan, Schwartz, Mineo & Terrana LLP in Uniondale, will be sworn in as secretary.
