Port Washington resident Wendy Perelman is teaming up with The Lion King star Alton Fitzgerald White for Broadway Workshops Come to Port Washington.

Broadway Workshops Come to Port Washington is a monthly program that features a Broadway professional co-teaching with musical theatre coach Perelman.

White, star of six Broadway musicals including “The Color Purple” and “Ragtime: The Musical,” will host two workshops on April 17 at the Sands Point Preserve Great Hall.

White is a critically acclaimed actor currently playing Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre in New York. He’s also featured in voice-overs, commercials, TV, film and concerts around the world.

“Any aspiring actor, anybody whose ever auditioned for anything or any show ever should come and learn from him,” Perelman said.

Perelman, an accomplished musical theatre producer and actress, has appeared in “Having it All” at the New World Stages in New York City, and in productions at the Second Stage Theatre, Equity Library Theatre and the Triad. She also co-starred in the indie film “Good Money: that won the New York Comedy Film Festival Award for Best Feature.

Perelman is also the conceiver and co-author of the original musical “Having it All,” produced by the Laguna Playhouse Theatre in Calif.

In addition, she co-produced fthe “Having It All” production that ran at the NoHo Arts Center in Los Angeles. She is currently teaching classes in voice, musical theatre and audition techniques to students of all ages.

“Even just to get your audition ready for the school play. Auditioning is not something you can just wing. You have to work on it,” Perelman said. “And so much of it is not just about the way you act and sing it’s also about how you walk into the room how you walk out of the room. Every moment counts.”

Perelman said workshop one, titled ‘Audition Technique,’ is for participants who want to sing. They should arrive with sheet music and 32 bars of a song prepared, as if they were attending an audition.

She said students who don’t want to sing are also welcome.

During the workshop, White will provide critic and give the entire group his take on how to audition effectively.

Perelman said he will answer questions regarding how to make the most of the limited time you have in the audition room, what you should do when you first walk in, how to communicate with the accompanist, and what you should do when you’re done singing.

The second workshop, titled ‘The Business of Show Business’ will provide participants the opportunity to ask White questions about Broadway, and the film and television business.

White will share his perspectives on a range of topics including, majoring in acting in college, what to expect at a professional audition, how to deal with rejection and not give up, and how and when to get an agent.

Workshop one is from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. and $100 per student. Workshop two is from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and $40 per participant. It’s $125 per participant to attend both workshops.
