Adelphi men finish fifth at NE-10 meet

The Adelphi University swim team completed competition in the 2015 Northeast-10 Championships on Sunday, Feb. 8 and closed out the four day competition with the men taking fifth place overall with 284 points, while the women earned eighth place overall behind 153 points.

Danielle Dreiss set the tone for the day, leading things off with a seventh place finish in the 1650 yard freestyle in a school record time of 18:13.18. This was Dreiss’ third school record in four days of competing at the Northeast-10 Championships. Jacqueline Vani also turned in a strong individual performance, finishing 14th overall in the 200 yard breaststroke in a time of 2:37.77.

Morgan McCurdy and Kelly Whelan rounded out Adelphi’s individual effort, finishing 15th and 16th in the 200 yard butterfly in 2:24.20 and 2:29.93, respectively.

The women closed out the meet with 11th and 15th place finishes in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Heather Miller teamed with Whelan, Dreiss and Vani, posting a time of 3:52.14, which earned them 11th overall, while Amanda Crosby, Pinki Sherpa, Emily DeMace and McCurdy were four spots back in 15th, thanks to a time of 4:05.15.

The highlight of the day for the men was Peter D’Ortenzio’s swim in the 200 yard butterfly. D’Ortenzio turned in the best individual performance of the championship for Adelphi, touching the wall in third overall, thanks to a time of 1:54.54. He was followed in the event by Ryan Mullin, who finished 15th in 2:05.86. The Panthers also had a strong showing in the 200 yard breaststroke, as three swimmers finished among the top-15. Michael Mayer finished eighth (2:12.58), Josef Sarabia was 11th (2:16.49) and Philip Guariglia rounded out the trio in 15th (2:25.21).

John Rotolo was eighth in the 1650 freestyle (17:12.66), while  John Salica turned in a 14th place finish in the 200 yard backstroke (2:25.37) and Zachary Mazur was 11th in the 100 yard freestyle (48.69).

The men also earned a fifth place and 13th place efforts in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Mazur, D’Ortenzio, John Bellotti and Gerard Theophilidis partnered up to finish fifth, with a time of 3:14.44, while the quartet of Mayer, Mullin, Sarabia and Ryan Walpole finished 13th overall with a clocking of 3:25.19.
