Aircraft noise not so bad

The Island Now

Mercy Me!

I must be going deaf and blind. A recent letter told us that 36,408 planes flew over East Williston in 2010. That is one plane every 7.68 minutes, 24/7/365. How did I not see them or at least hear them?

We were further told that planes flying below a certain altitude was a safety issue. Really? When was the last time a plane crashed into a community during a landing?

Oh yes, jet fuel is spewing down on us. When I get the chance I will ask the East Williston Department of Public Works how they go about cleaning all that fuel from our streets – they look darn good to me.

Yes, planes do fly over us from time to time. The sounds I hear are the sounds of progress. The latest generation of aircraft are many times quieter than the former generations. I find their sound a lot less annoying that the seemingly perpetual motion of a boy bouncing his basketball for hours on end, or the group of kids shouting and screaming on their trampoline.

We as adults put up with these annoyances with the realization that they come with the territory of living in suburbia.. Most of the houses in East Williston have central air resulting in windows being tight shut most if not all of the time. I do not have central air so my windows are open when the weather allows; I also sit in my backyard reading; yet I am not disturbed by the air traffic above us. I wonder why?
