Memorial Day is May 25, but in Manhasset, services have already begun.

Last Saturday, local Boy Scouts and members of the American Legion Post 304 placed flags upon the graves at the Community Reformed Church cemetery and posters denoting the community’s annual Memorial Day parade in shop windows along Plandome Road.

This Saturday, Boy Scouts and American Legion members will also place flags on the graves at the Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn and attend the Town of North Hempstead’s Memorial Day ceremony and fireworks display at 6:30 p.m.

On Sunday, the American Legion will attend the 10 a.m. service at Church of Our Savior Lutheran.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday on Plandome Road and proceed toward the Manhasset Secondary School, where members of the American Legion and its auxiliary will host a memorial service, present student leadership awards and introduce Manhasset’s poppy queen.

Manhasset and St. Mary’s high school students presented with Empire Boys and Empire Girls state awards from the American Legion will attend a leadership conference and workshop this summer.

Participants from more than 20 community organizations, including boy and girl scout troops, local Little Leagues and the Manhasset-Lakeville and Plandome fire departments are scheduled to march in the parade.

A barbecue for legion members and their families will take place at noon, following the Memorial Day services, at Post 304, located at 27 Bayview Ave.
