Amy Goodman talk on ‘Silenced Majority’

Amy Goodman, award-winning investigative journalist and host of Democracy Now! will be the featured speaker at Great Neck SANE/Peace Action’s annual Hiroshima Commemoration on Tuesday, Aug. 6. 

“Democracy Now!” is seen and heard daily on more than 900 stations across the United States. Amy is also a frequent guest on major cable and network TV programs, such as the Colbert Report. The author of four New York Times best sellers, her latest book, “The Silenced Majority,” proves once again the power of independent journalism. The Independent of London has called her “an inspiration.” 

The event, co- sponsored by the Social Justice Committee of the UUCSR and The L.I. Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives will mark the 68th anniversary of the atom bombing of Hiroshima. The theme is Rethinking Security: A call to action, no nukes, no wars, save the planet. 

Other speakers include: state Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, Jamie McKai of the UUCSR, executive director of the L.I. Alliance, Margaret Melkonian and Ariel Flajnik, peace fellow at Hofstra University. Music will be performed by dynamic folk singer Dave Sear. The program will be co-chaired by town Supervisor  Jon Kaiman and Shirley Romaine of Great Neck SANE/Peace Action.

Japanese children in costume will be there to distribute origami peace cranes which they have made. There will be refreshments and a book signing of “The Silenced Majority.” 

The event will take place at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock at 48 Shelter Rock Road in Manhasset.
