North Shore Animal League America finished its 2016 Tour for Life last Friday in New York City and completed 13 adoptions.

North Shore Animal League America, in partnership with PURINA ONE, made the final stop of its national life-saving adoption event at 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 13 at Columbus Circle in New York.

“It was an excellent event,” North Shore Animal League America Offsite Manager Matthew Carroll said.

North Shore Animal League America, located at 25 Davis Ave. in Port Washington, is the world’s largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization, according to its website.

Linda Church, PIX 11 weather anchor and Animal League America adopter, hosted the ceremonies.

As part of this life-saving celebration, North Shore Animal League America also presented NYPD Officer Ross Garner, from the 81st Precinct, Brooklyn, with the Animal League America’s Crystal Collar Award for his compassionate efforts saving the life of a kitten found abandoned on the side of the road on a cold January night.

In addition students from local schools, Stephen Gaynor School and P.S. 209 Clearview Gardens were in attendance to help raise funds and awareness for local shelters and the Mutt-i-grees’ programs that teach social and emotional learning skills with the use of animals.

Carroll said when they started the Tour for Life 16 years ago, more than 200 adoptions were conducted. This year the Tour for Life traveled over 26,000 miles and was responsible for more than 2,000 adoptions.

“It’s grown every year,” he said. “It’s a big accomplishment for everyone involved.”
