Animal Shelter opens new paved patio

The Island Now

Following through on the administration’s commitment to helping residents nurture their pets’ well-being, North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the Town Board today unveiled a new paved patio at the Animal Shelter, featuring bricks inscribed with tributes to residents’ pets.

The patio, which also boats wireless internet connection, was named “Paws to Remember,” and made possible through collaboration with the Shelter Connection, the Animal Shelter’s non-profit partner. The project was completed at no cost to taxpayers, as the construction was funded by the sale of pavers to residents who wished to memorialize their pets. More than 70 pavers have been sold so far.

The capital improvement project is the second phase of a three-phase plan to upgrade the Animal Shelter. The first phase was completed in 2008 and involved expanding the front lobby and waiting area. Phase three, a planned extension of the dog kennels, is yet to be scheduled.

Town Animal Shelter personnel were joined at the ribbon cutting ceremony by a host of elected officials including town Receiver of Taxes Charles Berman, town Clerk Leslie Gross, Councilwomen Dina De Giorgio, Lee Seeman and Anna Kaplan and Councilman Angelo Ferrara. County Legislators Judi Bosworth and Wayne Wink also attended.

The Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter makes dogs available for adoption and is responsible for enforcing local and state animal protection, control and licensing laws and administering town dog control services.
