Annual ‘Light the Night’ announced

The Munsey Park Women’s Club will hold its fourth-annual Light the Night event on December 8 at 5 p.m. in a holiday fundraising effort toward the village’s future building projects.

Residents can participate by purchasing a luminary kit to place in front of their homes for $20, from order forms they will be receiving in the mail, officials said.

“Light the Night is a beautiful Munsey Park tradition,” said Jennifer Johnston, the women’s club’s co-president, in a statement. “The quiet peacefulness of the evening is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season, come together as a community, and provide a moment to pause and reflect of all that we have to be thankful for.”

Proceeds from luminary kit sales will go toward rebuilding the sidewalk and street-crossing area at the corner of Hunt Lane and Abbey Road at Munsey Park Elementary School, which officials said would not only improve the overall look of the corner but increase the safety and well-being of the children who go to school there.

Kits will also be available for purchase at Waldmann Pond on November 23-24 from 12-2 p.m. Residents will also be able to pick up pre-ordered kits on those days.

The women’s club’s December 5 Shop Around the Block event will also sell luminary kits.

The women’s club works in conjunction with Skills Unlimited Inc. to put together the luminary kits. Skills Unlimited, of Oakdale, offers vocational training to those with disabilities.

A portion of last year’s Light the Night proceeds was used to help fund the installation of an aquatic infrastructure at Copley Pond, including an aerator to control algae, organic sludge and the growth of aquatic weeds.

“We faced a few challenges last year between the effects of Superstorm Sandy and the less than ideal cold, wet weather on the day of the event,” said Peggy Sica, who co-chairs the event with Michele Longobardi and Maria Mastando. “Despite the negatives Light the Night was, once again, a positive occasion. It’s great to be a part of such a special evening and I’m looking forward to another successful year.”
