Art Guild dishes out awards for photo exhibition

Super Bowl Sunday didn’t deter the more than 200 artists, friends and families who came to view The Art Guild’s “I’m Ready For My Closeup,” Juried Photography Exhibition on Sunday, Feb. 7, at Elderfields Preserve in Manhasset.

The exhibit, which will be on view through Sunday, Feb. 28, was judged by Harold Naideau, a photographer, artist, author and educator based on Long Island.

First Place was awarded to Scott Elberger for “Snug,” Second Place was awarded to Patricia Paladines for “Girl with Flower – Mafalala,” and Third Place was awarded to Brian Grandfield for “Chrysanthemum Petals.”

Honorable Mentions were awarded to Michael Lax for “Portrait of Gerald Eskin,” Joanna Gazzola for “Sadness,” and William MacMillan for “Protecting Kitty.”

A student award went to Robert Morris of Oyster Bay High School for “Through the Woods.”

“The response to this show, from the time the call-to-artists went out, was tremendous,” said Associate Executive Director Susan Herbst. “We had over 135 entries that the Photography Committee Chairs, Dave Wollin and Barbara Spivak, narrowed down to what you see here: 56 photographs by 50 artists, including 13 high school students. The juror-of-awards, Harold Naideau, was impressed with the quality of the work and said that it made choosing the winners very difficult.” A full list of participants is on The Art Guild’s Facebook page.

“We would like to thank everyone who attended, our Photography Committee, Mr. Naideau, and all the volunteers who help put a show like this together.” said Herbst.

The next exhibit “Travels and Destinations: Near and Far,” will take place March 5 – April 3, and a call-for-artists has gone out for “Line: Through Thick and Thin” (deadline March 18). Please check The Art Guild’s website and Facebook page throughout the year for information about our exciting programs and events.
