Artist to teach 2-day silkscreen workshop

The Island Now

Artist Stephanie Navon-Jacobson will return to teach a two-day workshop “Silkscreen Monotype” on June 11 and 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Art Guild at Elderfields Preserve, 200 Port Washington Blvd. in Manhasset.

This popular and fun workshop teaches a unique process that combines screenprinting and painting techniques using water-based materials — non-toxic, versatile and simple to master.

Navon-Jacobson will demonstrate the versatility of printmaking — as a stand alone process or as incorporated with other mediums such as oil or watercolor. Students will learn to create unique prints and will explore the layering possibilities for overprinting on drawings, prints and other media.

No prior experience or skill necessary. (Materials list provided at registration.

Students will need to purchase a reusable silkscreen and a squeegee.) Tuition is $150 for members and $180 non-members.

As an artist, Navon-Jacobson is always observing the world around her.

Whether floral, landscape, animal, or figure, abstract or realistic, her images always go back to nature.

She considers herself a printmaker who paints, rather than a painter who prints and likes to experiment with various techniques.

“It is so satisfying to work with people who are new to printmaking or to teach experienced artists a new technique and watch their enthusiasm as they get ‘bitten’ by the printmaking ‘bug,’” Navon-Jacobson said. “I encourage my students to add printmaking to their artistic arsenal and incorporate it with their other artistic endeavors.”

Navon-Jacobson teaches at The Art Guild, Art League of Long Island and St. John’s University.

The guild is also planning a spring session of classes and workshops for children and adults, including oil painting with Paul Bachem, Life Drawing with Nude Model, Watercolor for Beginners and Intermediate with Eileen Neville, Drawing with Stephanie Navon-Jacobson and Photography Workshops with Harold Naideau on May 7.
