Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company firefighters responded Wednesday to a call about a burning car in the Village of Great Neck Estates.

Vigilant Fire Company Chief Josh Forst said the initial call about the car fire at 13 North Clover Drive came in at 9:01 p.m.

“The owner said he was on his way home when it started smoking a little bit so I would assume it was an equipment malfunction,” Forst said.

He added the owner drove the smoking Audi home, where it then burst into flames in his driveway.

Forst said the three Vigilant Fire Company chiefs were at a meeting at the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department when they first got the call, so they were all on the road within a minute.

They arrived on scene at 9:05 p.m., he said, when he confirmed the vehicle was on fire with no exposure problems.

Although the vehicle was close to the home and surrounding trees, it was not close enough to become a problem, Forst said.

“For a couple of seconds it caught some low hanging trees but that’s pretty much it,” he added.

Forst said the fire was under control by 9:30 p.m.
