Port Washington residents will be given a chance to take their dogs for a walk while also supporting cancer research during the first Bark For Life event.

Bark for Life will be hosted by the American Cancer Society Inc. starting at 12 p.m. on June 4 at Manorhaven Dog Park, located at 81 Manorhaven Blvd. in Port Washington.

“Bark for Life is to really celebrate the significance that animals can have in some ones cancer journey,” American Cancer Society senior community manager Megan Stewart said.

She said they choose Port Washington as the location of the event because of the amount of the community.

“We were looking to do something new, and we knew how much of a dog community Port Washington is,” Stewart said.

The event includes a dog costume contest, Hat Trixx performance, dog and owner look-a-like contest, back to rock performance, essay winners, an agility course, and K-9 training.

Stewart said their goal is to raise $5,000 and have already raised $1,500 through sponsorship.

Funds raised will go towards cancer research, facilities such as Hope Lodge, which offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay when their treatment may be in another city, and transportation for patients.

Stewart said they are asking for a $10 donation and anybody can sign up online at www.relayforlife.org/barkportwashingtonNy

The American Cancer Society is a national community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem, according to its website.
