On Friday, March 4, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., Broadway producer Stewart F. Lane will be the guest in the pulpit at Temple Emanuel of Great Neck. He will offer the talk, “Black Broadway: African Americans on the Great White Way.” 

Stewart F. Lane is the founder of BroadwayHD.com, a stage to screen production and distribution company expanding the reach of Broadway shows by making them available in cinemas, PPV and streaming on-line. BroadwayHD.com’s recent productions include: Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill (Audra McDonald), Romeo and Juliet (Orlando Bloom), Cyrano de Bergerac (Kevin Kline), and Stephen Sondheim’s Company (Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Colbert, Pattie Lupone). The launch of BroadwayHD’s streaming service in September 2015 introduced the world’s largest collection of stage to screen content to the global audience. 

Mr. Lane is a six-time Tony award winning producer for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, War Horse, Jay Johnson: The Two & Only, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Will Rogers Follies and La Cage Aux Folles, as well as garnering an additional eight nominations for the Broadway Productions of The Merchant of Venice starring Al Pacino, Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, Sunday in the Park with George (revival), The Best Man (revival), Fiddler on the Roof  (revival) starring Alfred Molina, Gypsy (revival) starring Bernadette Peters, 1776 (revival), The Goodbye Girl starring Martin Short, and Woman of the Year starring Lauren Bacall. Other productions include Cyrano De Bergerac starring Kevin Kline, Legally Blonde, Wait Until Dark starring Quentin Tarantino and Marisa Tomei, Enron, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, A Street Car Named Desire and many more. Currently, Mr. Lane is producing the Gloria and Emilio Estefan musical biography On Your Feet. He has been nominated for and received numerous other industry awards.

Mr. Lane has written the critically acclaimed Black Broadway: African Americans on the Great White Way (Square One Publishers), the subject for his talk. Publishers Weekly offers this praise: “Filled with black-and-white and color photos and illustrations, this richly informative book by six-time Tony Award-winning Broadway producer Lane honors the legacy of determined African-American performers and ground-breaking productions . . . Additional books include: Jews on Broadway (McFarland Publishers), Let’s Put on a Show, (Working Arts Library) which is also on DVD, and the plays In The Wings (published in the spring 2008 by Hal Leonard), If It Was Easy (published by Performing Books and nominated for Best New Play by the American Theatre Critics Association), and A Moment In Time (with music and lyrics by John Denver) which he was awarded The 2011 John Denver Spirit Award for his work.

Mr. Lane’s talk is preceded by a brief service. Following his talk, there will be a Q & A, and, in conclusion, a book signing, when refreshments will be served. All members of the community are invited to attend. Admission is free.
