BOCES honors Wendy Blanco

The Island Now

Wendy Blanco, from the Great Neck School District, earned the Nassau BOCES George Farber Outstanding Student Award for her determination. She was among 17 honorees recognized during a gala ceremony held at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset recently.

Upon enrolling in the Nassau BOCES Teenage Parenting Program, Wendy quickly earned distinction as a standout scholar. She is an honors student with a rigorous course load who is well on her way to earning an Advanced Regents diploma. Her teachers praise her for her performance ability and her excellent work ethic.

She is an achiever in the classroom and a leader outside of it. She has helped promote community service projects, like clothing drives, and took on a political role as an advocate for the Teenage Parenting Program. Perhaps her most impressive performance, however, is as a mother.

“Her love for her daughter is evident,” her teachers say. They are “confident she will succeed,” not only as a student, but also as a mom.

TAP enables pregnant and parenting teens to continue their high school education and become responsible, competent mothers. The program supports their efforts to become independent, self-sufficient young adults with confidence in their ability to succeed.
