Boy Scouts take to Appalachian Trail

The Island Now

Scouts and leaders of Great Neck’s Scout Troop 10 recently completed a backpacking trek along the Appalachian Trail in Harriman State Park. The group hiked 4.2 miles with all equipment on their backs: clothing, tents, food, pots, pans, lightweight stoves, fuel and water.

Along the way they passed through the “Lemon Squeezer,” an extremely narrow passageway caused by a large rock that fell off a cliff years ago. After setting up camp, the boys prepared dinner featuring a dish called Crunchy Hamburger Rice, made with tomato soup, onions and celery added for the crunch.

After a relaxing campfire, the boys had a well-earned sleep in their waterproof tents, oblivious to the rain that fell during the night. After a breakfast of oatmeal-in-the-pouch (a good hand warmer while eating) the scouts cleaned up the campsite, packed up and hiked just more than a mile to the pickup site for the ride home.
