Breakfast to honor veterans

The Island Now

To help ease the transition to civilian life for those returning home from combat and to pay tribute to all who have served our country, the Town of North Hempstead will host the third annual “Thank You to Our Veterans” breakfast next week.

Since its inception, the annual breakfast has attracted hundreds of attendees and continues to grow each year. This year, speakers will include Joe Sledge, public affairs officer of the Northport VA Medical Center, and Timothy Spier, project coordinator of the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans PTSD Peer Support Project.

Representatives from various agencies will be at the event to help veterans tap into a myriad of services, benefits and entitlements. That includes social workers from the Town of North Hempstead’s Project Independence, town Receiver of Taxes Charles Berman, New York State Assemblywoman Michele Schimel, John Javis of the Veterans Health Alliance, and Jonathan Spiers of the Long Island State Veterans Home.

The event will be held at Clinton G. Martin Park on Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Veterans wishing to attend the breakfast can reserve a seat by calling 311 or (516) 869-6311.
