Buses to replace early LIRR trains Saturday

Four early-morning Long Island Railroad trains between Great Neck and Manhasset on Saturday will be replaced by bus and van service due to track inspections, Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials said.

MTA officials said the Sperry Rail Car will perform the inspection Saturday from approximately 1:33 a.m. until 5:35 a.m. The Sperry Rail Car is used twice a year to inspect 500 miles of railroad track.

Eastbound riders will travel to Great neck and board buses or vans to their Manhasset, Plandome and Port Washington destinations, while westbound customers will board buses or vans at Port Washington, Plandome and Manhasset and take trains at Great Neck to continue their trip, MTA officials said.

MTA officials said customers should allow up to 31 minutes of additional travel time to accommodate the inspections and service changes.

According to MTA officials, the Sperry Rail Car uses ultrasonic and induction test equipment designed to identify internal rail defects not visible to the eye, which are then corrected immediately by LIRR track maintenance workers.
