Cabral named STEM to board

The Island Now

The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced that Great Neck resident Joseph Cabral was named to the Long Island Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Hub board of champions earlier this month.

“Even though the LI STEM Hub is only a little more than a year old, it has already accomplished so much and has plans to do many more things,” said Cabral, who is the chief human resources officer at North Shore-LIJ,

The LI STEM Hub, which has North Shore-LIJ and Brookhaven National Laboratory as co-stewards, is increasing the pool of Long Island’s future workforce by increasing education in the STEM subjects. The board helps determine the priorities of the organization and ensures alignment to regional economic development strategies.

North Shore-LIJ has helped the LI STEM Hub create regional industry councils in six high-growth industries and career academies, among other things. Career academies help middle school and high school students keenly focus on STEM subjects through industry examples. Currently, there are career academies in the following school districts: Plainview-Old Bethpage, Baldwin, Massapequa, East Islip, South Huntington and Richmond Hill in Queens. That number is growing.

“Through our work with the career academies and other efforts, I look forward to seeing Long Island students’ passions for STEM subjects growing and having a more STEM-educated workforce on Long Island in the future,” Cabral said.
