Capital project planning takes step forward

Design plans to the first wave of projects funded by the Roslyn School District’s $41.3 million capital bond could be completed by mid September, engineers said Monday.

Erik Kaeyer, the vice president and design principal of KG&D Architects, provided the Roslyn Board of Education with updated concepts for infrastructure repairs to the interiors and exteriors of East Hills Elementary School, Roslyn Middle School and the district’s bus garage.

Kaeyer said construction would begin during summer 2016, when the life of the district’s initial $6 million bond begins.

Though KG&D has maintained cost estimates of the plans it has designed, Kaeyer said exact costs would not be fully known until designs are converted into construction plans.

“There haven’t been any red flags,” Kaeyer said. “Over the next month we’re confident we’re going to get to where we’ve been expecting to get to.”

East Hills Elementary School

Exterior plans to the school include the repaving of various sidewalks, curbs and stretches of pavement, notably at the school’s main entrance.

“There’s a lot of pavement on this campus that’s in pretty bad shape,” Kaeyer said.

Kaeyer said KG&D has also designed extensions to the school’s parking lots to accommodate between 20-25 new spaces and the replanting of several trees.

The plans also include updates to the main entrance’s security system, the installation of LED lighting throughout the building and new floors and ceilings in classrooms and hallways.

Roslyn Middle School

Kaeyer said the pavement at Roslyn Middle School had been repaired more recently than at East Hills and would not require as much attention as other areas of the campus.

KG&D has planned for new finish applied to all the floors as well as new flooring in the building’s newest wing.

Kaeyer said new lighting will be installed in the building’s two cafeterias, and that KG&D would also modify the ceiling – which has an inverted, boxy appearance to house electrical equipment – to be safer and more aesthetically pleasing.

District Bus Garage

KG&D is planning an extension of the district’s maintenance building, the new site of its bus garage, and an exit route that will not affect neighboring residences. The adjacent properties would also be shielded from view by proposed plantings.
