A driver operating a Lexis apparently lost control of the vehicle and crashed through the front of a restaurant in Mineola early Monday morning, Nassau County Police said.

Mineola Fire Department Chief Jeffrey Clark said members of his department responded to call at the Grand Master Grill at the intersection of 2nd Street and Roslyn Road. He said the car had crashed into the front of the building at 78 Roslyn Road and did substantial damage to the building.

“He hit the building at a high rate of speed,” Clark said.

The unidentified male driver had been extracted from the car by members of the Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps and were putting him in an ambulance by the time units of the Mineola Fire Department arrived, Clark said.

Clark said the fire department evacuated an uninjured tenant from an apartment above the restaurant.

He said the center post supporting the building was demolished and there was extensive damage to the front of the vehicle.

“There was extensive damage to the front of the store. We used lumber from our truck to prevent any collapse,” Clark said.

Members of the Mineola Fire Department shored up the front of the building with 10 4-foot by 4-foot pieces of lumber.

“We carry all kinds of wood and cribbing just for instances like this” Clark said.

He said all three Mineola Fire Department chiefs were on scene with a heavy rescue truck from Company 2 and engines from Company 1 and 3.

Nassau County Police also responded to the scene. The police said no charges were made against the car’s driver, who was not identified.
