Car plummets near rail tracks

A driver escaped with minor injuries after his car fell 20 feet from an elevated parking lot near the Great Neck Long Island Rail Road Station Sunday morning, leading the Metropolitan Transit Authority to suspend Port Washington line service for an hour and a half.

An unidentified 58-year-old man in a Toyota Prius plunged from the parking lot to an embankment near the train tracks after hitting a fence while trying to park, according to MTA spokesperson Aaron Donovan.

The MTA halted train service between Port Washington and Bayside as the accident site was cleared until the go-ahead was given at 9:00 a.m., Donovan said.

A News 12 video shows the parking lot, ringed with chain link fencing, and the sharp drop to the track-side embankment down which the car fell Sunday morning. The video also shows the Prius being towed away from the scene with heavy damage to its roof.

No charges were filed, and a Nassau County Police spokesperson said that while county policy had provided assistance the MTA had led the response to the accident.
