Carey High School facility gets makeover

A storage facility used by H. Frank Carey High School’s Parent Teacher Student Association has received an artistic makeover donated by a Class of 2007 alumnus, the school announced last Wednesday.

Andrew Berardi and partner Fred Pirlot spray-painted a mural in the school’s black and orange colors in graffiti style on the building to portray Carey Principal’s “Four P’s for Success” – punctuality, preparedness, perseverance and participation.

“It was very cool for them to let me do something like this,” said Berardi, an art director for the Manhattan firm Bandujo Advertising. “I thought the design would connect well with the students because it’s cool and edgy.”

The mural is a WallsPace production, Berardi said, a platform he and Pirlot created to assist business owners, curators, community groups and public institutions in hiring local artists to create free public murals.

Angelillo said she was delighted with the finished piece.

“I think when anyone who graduates and gives back to their school it’s a statement about who they are and what their high school experience has meant to them,’ she said.

Berardi says he plans to return to the school to speak to students about graphic design.

“Hopefully it will connect with the students and will inspire them to do something artistic,” he said.
