Cars towed in GN Plaza sign snafu

Water Authority of Great Neck North Superintendent Gregory Graziano said confusion over signs posted recently at the Village of Great Neck Plaza Grace Avenue water main replacement project site caused four cars parked on Barstow Road to be towed.

The cars were towed several spots away on Barstow Road or into Great Neck Plaza’s municipal parking lot on Grace Avenue so that portions of paving on the water main project could be completed two weeks ago, Graziano said.

“It had the right day, but the wrong actual date on the notices,” Graziano said of the signs. “People thought they could move the cones and pull into the spots.”

The people who parked illegally had their cars towed at the expense of Bancker Construction Corporation, which was contracted by the water authority to complete the paving on the Grace Avenue water main project, Graziano said.

“It was just to protect the cars,” Graziano said of the towings. “They didn’t want to get the cars damaged during the paving of the road. They were either put into the municipal lot or moved a couple of spots away.”

There was no damage reported to any of the towed cars, Graziano said.

Work to complete the Grace Avenue Water Main Restoration project began in late March and is nearing completion this week, Graziano said.

The new water main was placed along Grace Avenue from Middle Neck Road to Grace Court. Additional work to replace water valves was also done on Barstow Road, Canterbury Road, Chapel Place, Stoner Avenue, Gilchrest Road, Linden Place and Park Place.

Graziano said all water main work and paving has been completed on the project. He said the only remaining work is for crews to paint new crosswalks and other road striping on the areas effected by the project.
