Cat Pack claws Manhattan

The Island Now

The NHP GU9 Cat Pack renewed their rivalry with Manhattan SC on a perfect Sunday afternoon in New Hyde Park.

The Cat Pack came out strong and played one of their best all round games of the season. With Sofia Quijada at striker and Lily Becker, Maria Poulos, Mary Langan and Caitriona Smith at midfield, New Hyde Park attacked frequently and scored three goals. The first came on a perfect cross by Lily Becker that Mary Langan calmly redirected to the back of the net. Quijada and Becker would each score their own goal to put the Cat Pack up 3-0.

Manhattan SC regrouped and played a solid game, but the Cat Pack’s defense, which has played lights out all spring, would not give an inch.

Missing Jenna Neu for the game, the rotation of Jackie Jara, Sara Aranov, Amanda Garcia, Bridget Slaski, and Caitlin Sheehan held Manhattan to very few scoring opportunities.

The few chances that Manhattan put on goal were stopped by the Cat Pack’s goalie, Nikki Caneda. Caneda played a solid game in net and had the highlight of the game when she stopped a Manhattan penalty kick.

The game ended in a 3-0 Cat Pack win. It was great to see the girls play with poise today. The passing was especially noteworthy as the girls looked for each other and connected all game. Congrats girls on a great win and good luck in your Memorial Day weekend tournament in Commack.
