Chaminade edges Holy Cross, 3-0

The Island Now

The Chaminade High School varsity football team managed only a third quarter field goal from kicker John Curylo Saturday, but the three points proved to be enough. The Flyers held off Holy Cross for a hard-fought, 3-0 shutout win to remain unbeaten on the 2013 campaign and atop the CHSFL standings.

The game featured blocked field goals on either side, as defense ruled the day. Holy Cross, coached by longtime Valley Stream resident Tom Pugh, held the vaunted Chaminade ground attack in check for most of the day. Robert Speranza Jr. had just 19 yards on 12 carries, while quarterback Sean Cerrone added 14 yards on 10 carries. It was fullback Joseph Bellantunono who led the way with 38 yards on nine attempts. Cerrone was 4-for-8 in the air, including three to Speranza, who finished with 99 yards receiving.

“It was a great game, great defensive struggle,” Pugh said.

The Knights had several opportunities to tie or take the lead, but each time Chaminade answered the call.
