The New York Cosmos presented Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano with the 2015 North American Soccer League (NASL) Championship Trophy at a press conference earlier this week in Mineola.

The presentation was made by New York Cosmos Co-Owner Jeremy Wilkins, Cosmos Chief Operating Officer Erik Stover; Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese; and the entire New York Cosmos team, including Mineola-born Captain Carlos Mendes and Spanish legends Marcos Senna and Raul.

“Nassau County is truly proud to serve as home to the New York Cosmos,” Mangano said. “Together, we celebrate the Cosmos championship victory in the 2015 North American Soccer League.”

On Nov. 15, the New York Cosmos won their second NASL title in three years. The championship is the seventh NASL title in the club’s history.

The New York Cosmos began playing in 1971, spending 14 seasons in the North American Soccer League, winning five Soccer Bowl trophies and bringing some of the biggest names in world soccer to the USA. This included Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia and Carlos Alberto.

The New York Cosmos currently play games at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium and practice in Nassau County at Mitchel Field, where the Mangano administration formed a public-private partnership with the team to improve the facility.
