Christmas gets short shrift in village display

The Island Now

I have lived in the Village of Great Neck for over 60 years and have witnessed the celebration of all religious holidays that take place within the community.

In recent years all of these holidays have been celebrated equally throughout the village which is a wonderful thing. I am perplexed by one location’s display of banners for this years holidays. The CVS store (parking lot) on Middle Neck Road in the village has three banners flying. I had asked the manager of the store and they told me that the village had hung the banners.

The banners read “Season’s Greetings,” “Happy Holidays” and “Happy Hanukkah.”

I do find it odd that there is a Hanukkah banner and not a Merry Christmas banner. I understand that the all encompassing Seasons Greetings and the Happy Holiday banners are appropriate for all but to mention one specific religious holiday and exclude another is not the correct way to foster harmony.

I am sure this was done with no malice or bad intentions, 100 percent sure but it would be nice to see representation for all when it comes to specific banners. I do wish all in my community a very happy Hanukkah and a very merry Christmas.
