The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock is set to donate $680,000 in grants to five area organizations for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
“We are very fortunate to be able to support the important work of these organizations towards relief and restoration of Long Island in the aftermath of Sandy,” congregation president Barbara Grosmark said in a release. “UUCSR takes pride in acting on the Unitarian Universalist faith through social activism, volunteerism and overall support of the local community. These grants are an example of our commitment to good works.”
ALIGN for the Alliance for a Just Rebuilding will receive $150,000 toward a comprehensive organizing campaign for NY-based organizations working in poor neighborhoods.
The Health and Welfare Council of Long Island will receive $200,000 to fund the operations of the Long Island Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters, which will also distribute grants for unmet needs.
The Interfaith Nutrition Network will receive $100,000 to purchase bulk perishable and non-perishable food items after experiencing a greater food demand after the storm.
The congregation will donate $100,000 to the Unitarian Universalist District of Metropolitan New York to hire a coordinator of disaster response and volunteer services, to oversee repair and recovery assistance to the church’s members most affected by Sandy.
Sustainable Long Island, which promotes economic development, environmental health and social equity for all Long Islanders, will receive $130,000 in support of a five-component collaboration with the City of Long Beach to ensure the city’s economic recovery.
The congregation is located at 48 Shelter Rock Road in Manhasset.
