Close games for Top Soccer teams

The Island Now

It was another busy Saturday for Top Soccer players.  In the Seniors game, the Green team jumped out ahead with a goal by Nickolas Mazariegos but the Red team’s Stefani Egre quickly tied it up.  Sebastian Garcia was solid in the goal for the Green team with terrific defense by Samantha Duggan, Justin Almonte, and Mary Glass.

The ball was played back and forth between the two teams and finally the Green team broke out with pinpoint passing by Patrick Williams, Frankie LaPinta, and Tristan Yang.  Sebastian Gonzalez made the second goal for the Green team, but the Red team pushed for another goal with Tim Roth making the play; it was his third goal in three games.  Billy Russo and Andrea Matteo worked hard for the go ahead goal for the Red team but once again David Glass showed off his dribbling skills and was able to put the go ahead goal in for the Green team.

The Intermediates began their game on a much larger field in preparation for the Plainview Tournament.  All the athletes proved that they had the ability to be on a field of this size.  Blue team’s goalie Petros D’Amico had another fantastic game and keeps getting better and better in this position.  Unfortunately, speedster Chris Cooney was able to put one goal by Petros D’Amico for the Red team.

Joshua Ham, Sophocles Gianakis, and Sebastian Pinto made some beautiful passes for the Blue team and quickly ran down the field and Sebastian Pinto scored the tying goal. Red team’s Daniel Calabrese did a great job as a player/goalie along with Marcus Nicholson.  Alex Laroia and Marcus Nicolson made some stupendous plays down the sidelines.  Coach Maiken Bursig was certainly proud of the Intermediates’ game today and they are definitely ready for more competition.

It was another tie in the Juniors competition with the Blue team’s Anthony Chung scoring three goals all within five minutes of the game.  The Red team’s Jesse Sarro (2), Brain Cisneros, Brandon Cisneros (2), Desmond O’Callaghan, Demond Pearson (2) all had beautiful goals.

But the Blue team had some strength left in their plays, and Jhaisyn Almanzar, Ryan Bell, James Sarro, and Lucas Mitacchione each had a breakaway to add to the score.  David Cheung also showed off his skill work, by adding the eighth goal for the Blue team.

The athletes will be traveling to Plainview/Old Bethpage for the annual TOP Soccer spring tournament/BBQ on June 2/  The players are ready to play their best as individuals and as a team. “Sammy the Soccer Ball”, the NHP Wildcats Top Soccer mascot says:  play fair, play as a team, follow the rules and have fun – good luck athletes!
