Cosmos to hold ‘Back to School’ youth clinics

The Island Now

The New York Cosmos will hold a series of free “Back to School” soccer clinics in the coming weeks.

The four currently scheduled clinics are being coordinated with youth organizations in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island, and will be available to kids between the ages of 7 and 14 in the first weeks of September.

“The New York Cosmos are committed to offering the best experience for our fans,” Cosmos Chief Operating Officer Erik Stover said. “We also see ourselves and our players as part of this community as well. It’s our privilege to give local kids the opportunity to work with and learn from some of our great athletes that play right here in New York.”

Those interested in the clinic are encouraged to go to www.nycosmostdp.com. Space is limited and is filling up fast.

“As a native New Yorker, being able to play for the Cosmos is a dream come true, and it’s made even more special when we get to go into the community and work directly with the next generation of American soccer stars,” said Cosmos captain Carlos Mendes, a Mineola native with more than a decade of experience in professional soccer.

Professional Coaches from the NY Cosmos Training and Development Program along with several current players from the New York Cosmos roster will attend the clinics, participate in drills and work directly with the kids. Afterwards, the players will also be available to meet with the kids and sign autographs.

The Nassau County camp will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. The clinic for players ages 7 through 10 will be held between 5 and 6 p.m. and 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. for ages 11 through 14.

The Cosmos began play in 1971, spending 14 seasons in the North American Soccer League, winning five Soccer Bowl trophies and bringing some of the biggest names in world soccer to the USA. This included Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia and Carlos Alberto.

It’s been nearly 30 years since the Cosmos, an iconic global soccer club, have played in a professional league. Yet throughout their absence, the club has maintained a loyal and dedicated fan following.

On Aug. 3, 2013, New York Cosmos returned to the NASL with a sell-out win at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium. For more information and tickets for the 2013 season please visit www.nycosmos.com or call 855-71-COSMOS.
