County police to help fight speeders

The Village of Plandome’s board of trustees announced at its work session Monday that an inspector from the 3rd Precinct of the Nassau County Police Department will be in attendance at the board’s meeting next Tuesday to discuss traffic calming options along Brookside Drive, village officials said.

At the village’s board of trustees meeting last month, residents from Woodridge Road, Rockwood Road and Brookside Drive addressed concerns that children who play outside on those roads are at risk, as the village has been prone to speeding motorists.

Options to curb speeding were discussed at the last meeting, which included a rejected request for added stop signs as well as mobile speed signs and yellow lights urging motorists to slow down.

“There are a lot of Web sites out there that talk about what you can do to calm traffic, and we’ve been talking about all these things that we can do, but we’ve got to remember that the people speeding are also our neighbors,” Trustee Katie Saville said at last month’s meeting. “The kids at risk here are our children. It all starts with us.”

The speed limit on village roads, Village of Plandome Mayor M. Lloyd Williams said last month, is 30 miles per hour, but residents said they have seen motorists driving by at close to highway speeds. Discussion on two road repaving projects, on North Drive and Brookside Drive, were put off until next week’s board meeting, Village Clerk Elizabeth Kaye said, as the board needs more time for analysis and review of contracting bids.

The board also appointed two new fireman, Daniel Erb and Martin Clarke, to its volunteer department.
