County sales tax revenue up 11.2%

The Island Now

Sales Tax revenues for the first six months of 2013 for the County are up 11.2 percent and confirm the continuing economic recovery after Superstorm Sandy.

The July 12, 2013 sales tax check came in a very strong 61.9 percent higher than the same period last year due to the state’s adjustments for underpayments in the May and June checks distributed to the County.

“This is indeed good news for County taxpayers as it underscores the strength of the economic recovery since Superstorm Sandy,” said Comptroller George Maragos. “The economic strength is rippling throughout our County, creating jobs and opportunities.

“It explains the low 6 percent unemployment in the County and the robust employment gains,” Maragos added.
