Nassau County will host a free Narcan training seminar on October 7 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Gold Coast Library in Glen Head.
Attendees will learn how to administer the antidote, which reverses the effects of an opiate overdose, as well as how to identify the warning signs of drug addiction and other treatment options.
“Through education, awareness enforcement and treatment, my administration and the Heroin Prevention Task Force are diligently combatting heroin and opioid abuse throughout Nassau,” Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said in a statement. “These free Overdose Prevention Seminars continue to help save lives and keep families whole.”
Nassau earned certification to teach residents how to use Narcan in 2012, and has since provided training to about 4,000 civilians.
The county has recorded more than a dozen incidents in which Narcan was used to revive someone who had overdosed on heroin or painkillers.
Narcan, approved for residential use in a 2006 state law, is administered via a nasal spray.
According to Nassau County figures, 190 people died in 2014 due to heroin and prescription overdoses.
Trainees who attend the county’s clinics will receive a certificate of completion as well as a Narcan kit.

Those who attend seminars are eligible upon request for two Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor program hours.
