De Giorgio enters race for town supervisor

Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio (R-Port Washington) has thrown her hat in the ring for November’s town supervisor election.

De Giorgio, an attorney who won her council seat after switching from the Democratic to Republican parties in 2011, announced her candidacy at a press event held at H on the Harbor in Port Washington, where she was introduced by former U.S. Sen. and influential Republican fundraiser Al D’Amato.

De Giorgio criticized what she described as the unstable finances of the town and portrayed Kaiman as disinterested in the job, according to Newsday.

“I don’t think that [Town Supervisor] Jon Kaiman wants the job anymore, and I do,” she told Newsday

Kaiman, the Democratic incumbent who has held the office since 2004, is yet to announce whether he will run for re-election.

“I think that it is a little early to be focused on politics,” Kaiman said in a statement. “I am focused on running our town government.”

Kaiman had weighed a run for county executive and formed an exploratory committee before declaring that he would not run after former Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) announced that he would seek the Democratic nomination.

De Giorgio has lived in the Town of North Hempstead for 15 years and has two children with her husband Joe, according to her Web site. She graduated from Fordham Law School in 1992 and runs a law practice focusing on family and real estate law.

De Giorgio’s 6th Council District includes Port Washington, including the villages of Baxter Estates, Manorhaven, Port Washington North, and Sands Point.  She also represents the villages of Flower Hill, Plandome, Plandome Heights and Plandome Manor.
