Dr. Ostrer to speak on Jewish genetic history

The Island Now

A discussion of Jewish genetic history will be the topic for an evening with author and Albert Einstein School of Medicine professor Dr. Harry Ostrer at 7:30 pm. Thursday, Nov. 14.

In his recent book, Legacy, Dr. Ostrer blends history, science and biography to offer readers a fresh perspective on the Jewish people around the world and their history. He will explore the quintessential question of who Jews are: a race, a people, a religious group. Ostrer also will discuss a related project that he devised, the “Jewish Hap Map Project,” which focuses on creating a database of Jewish genomes.

Dr. Ostrer’s book presents a cutting-edge portrait of population genetics, a field that may soon take its place as a pillar of group identity.
