Dr. Shore to speak on Autism at library

The Island Now

World renowned speaker and author about autistic spectrum disorders, Dr. Stephen Shore, is giving a presentation about best practices for teaching and helping children on the spectrum. Shore’s research spans more than 20 years, and he also brings a unique insight as a person diagnosed with autism at four years old. His story is one of triumph as he lives with autism yet has achieved his PhD and is currently a professor at Adelphi University.

Shore’s presentation will be on Monday, Oct. 7, in the Manhasset Library, courtesy of Manhasset SEPTA.

“What an inspirational story and what valuable information for parents and educators alike,” Manhasset SEPTA Co-President Debbie Najmi said. “To have both his autism research and his own insights as a person on the Autistic Spectrum combined is a once in a lifetime learning opportunity.”

“We hope everyone in the community will attend to learn how to better understand, teach, support and enrich children on the Autistic Spectrum,” Manhasset SEPTA Co-President Diane Treacy said.

Diagnosed with “atypical development and strong autistic tendencies” and “too sick” for outpatient treatment, Shore was recommended for institutionalization. Nonverbal until four years old and with much support from his parents, teachers, wife and others, Shore is now a professor at Adelphi University where his research focuses on matching best practice to the needs of people with autism.

In addition to working with children and talking about life on the autism spectrum, Shore presents and consults internationally on issues pertinent to education, relationships, employment, advocacy and disclosure.  He is author of several books including “Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome,” “Ask and Tell: Self-advocacy and Disclosure for People on the Autism Spectrum,” the critically acclaimed “Understanding Autism for Dummies,” as well as completing his newly released DVD, “Living along the Autism Spectrum: What it means to have Autism or Asperger Syndrome.”

In addition to speaking across the world and being a professor at Adelphi University, Shore is president emeritus of the Asperger’s Association of New England and a former board member of the Autism Society.

The presentation is at 7 p.m. in the library community room. The presentation is free and open to the public, but registration is recommended. Registration is accepted by e-mail at manhassetsepta@gmail.com.
