Village of East Hills trustees Wednesday approved the addition of a stop sign at the intersection of Avon Lane and Crescent Lane that would stop westbound traffic.
The village received a letter from a resident on Aug. 14 requesting the stop sign, said Village Attorney Bill Burton.
The letter was then passed on to the board, which brought it to the attention of the Traffic and Safety Commission, Burton said.
The commission conducted two inspections of the intersection, Burton said, one in late August and one in late September.
“In our opinion, the application met with all the most stringent criteria,” said Steven Kafka, chairman of the Traffic and Safety Commission.
“It was a blind corner, there was significant speeding, it is hard to see around the corner and there was a path with walking to the park,” he said.
The commission summarized their conclusions of the inspections on Oct. 15, and then asked the board for approval, Burton said.
In other business, Deputy Mayor Manny Zuckerman said the structure for a new shaded area located directly to the right of the kiddie pool at the Park at East Hills will be put up within the next two weeks.
Zuckerman said the shade itself will be put up in May, when the pool will be open for the season.
The idea for the shaded area “came at the request of young mothers” who supervised their children near the kiddie pool, Zuckerman said.
Koblenz said that Dylan Jensen and Matthew Brendel, the two lifeguards who saved a child’s life at the park’s pool in September, will be honored by the board when they return home from school.
No date has been set for the lifeguards to be honored, Koblenz said.
The board will also notice a public hearing to consider changes to the rules of the park on Nov. 18.
Trustee Stacy Siegel said that the annual East Hills Spooktacular event was “a big success.”
Siegel said that 350 children and their families attended the event.
Activities included a spooky walking trail, a hayride, a bounce house and face painting.
“[It was a] really great day for everybody,” Siegel said.
The next board meeting will be on Nov. 18.
