In response to residents’ concerns regarding the replacement of trees, plants and shrubs lost during Hurricane Sandy, the Village of East Hills announced during the board of trustees’ annual organizational meeting Monday a tree education seminar sponsored by Hicks Nurseries.
The seminar will take place April 11 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Village Theatre and will be presented by Richard Abate, Hicks Nurseries’ landscaping designer.
According to a release, Abate “will provide an educational overview of how to restore your landscape,” and discuss the “best trees and shrubs that will thrive in our community as well as some tips of pruning, watering and designing your landscape.”
“We lost a lot of trees in the storm and people want to know how to replace them,” Village of East Hills Mayor Michael Koblenz said. “We’re very tree conscious in East Hills and now that spring is here, we think it’s the best time to do this and educate people on the different trees in the village and how to care for them.”
During the meeting, the board set its annual appointments for various committee members and began planning its meeting dates for the upcoming fiscal year.
Koblenz said the village will announce its tentative 2013-14 budget online a few days before its scheduled public hearing during the April 15 board of trustees meeting.
The board announced four zoning statutes to set for future public hearings, defining standards and requirements for leaf removal, standards and requirements for the village’s retaining walls, standards for storm water retention, and standards for the installation or replacement of sanitary systems throughout the village.
The village also recognized the winners of the 11th annual Mayor’s Trophy Softball Championship, a team led by resident Eric Kobrick, after their win in last September’s tournament.
“Ironically, because it was opening day for the Mets and Yankees, it was the perfect night to award our champion,” Koblenz said.
