East Hills OKs spending for roads, trucks

East Hills trustees on Thursday approved bids on the next phase of road work in the village as well as those submitted for various new public works vehicles.

The board approved a $1,264,750.50 bid for road and drainage work to the Westbury-based Stasi Brothers Asphalt Corp.

Work is expected to begin sometime in July, officials said, on parts of Flamingo Road, Cardinal Drive, Finch Drive, Tara Drive, Georgian Court, Spruce Drive, Westwood Circle, Starling Court and Holly Lane.

Drainage work on Woodhollow Road will also be performed, officials said.

The village has already spent about $900,000 this year on other road improvements.

Trustees also approved a $237,100 bid from the Brooklyn-based Vasso Waste Equipment Sales Inc for the sale of a new street sweeper.

East Hills Mayor Michael Koblenz said sweepers tend to last about 10-15 years before they have to be replaced and added that the vehicle had to be purchased through competitive bid due to the lack of an opportunity to acquire one via a state contract.

Vasso was the only company to submit a bid to the village for the contract.

“They’ve got to build the thing,” Koblenz said. “You can’t go into the showroom and say, I’d like that sweeper.”

With various equipment additions to the vehicle, the final cost is $240,590, officials said.

A $163,500 bid from the Westbury-based Syosset Truck Sales Inc was also approved for the purchase of a new sanitation truck.

The total cost of the vehicle, officials said, would be $166,900.
