East Hills Mayor Michael Koblenz announced Thursday that the village had been awarded a $250,000 state grant to repair its roads, the largest governmental grant the village had ever received.

“We spend a lot of money repaving our roads and any state aid we can get is welcomed,” Koblenz said.

He said the village hires an engineer every year to assess the state of its roads to determine which ones needs repaving the most, grading them A through F.

That way the village knows which roads to repair and not by residents suggestion, Koblenz said.

The road repairs, which Koblenz said costs the village $2 million a year, are made twice a year — in the fall and during the spring.

Koblenz said that in addition to the grant the village will be getting a financial boost this year thanks to decreasing gas prices, which will reduce the cost of operating road tarring vehicles.
