Two East Hills lifeguards who in late September revived a child who had fallen into the deep end of the village’s pool will be honored at a Board of Trustees meeting sometime this winter, when they have returned from college, Mayor Michael Koblenz said Wednesday.
Koblenz said he met with the two lifeguards, who were not identified during Wednesday’s trustees meeting, before they went to school for the fall semester.
“These guys are wonderful,” Koblenz said. “They saved that kid’s life.”
The incident took place Sept. 6, when “the dad had more children than he could watch” and “the little one wandered off and went off the deep end,” Koblenz said.
The boy was pulled from the water and given CPR before an ambulance arrived.
East Hills lifeguards must be certified by Nassau County and the American Red Cross, and pass a CPR exam administered by the village prior to starting on the job, Koblenz said.
The mayor added that the village will explore ways of increasing the supervision of children over the next year, prior to the pool’s opening next summer.
In an email to residents following the incident, Koblenz said East Hills Park Director William Gavin would also be honored for having “handled the response masterfully.”
In other developments:
• The board transferred $1.4 million from its fund balance for road repairs.
• East Hills’ annual Spooktacular event will take place from 1-4 p.m. on Oct. 17, with a rain make-up date of Oct. 18.
• Trustees approved bids to Penn Toyota for the purchase of two vehicles, a 2015 Prius Hybrid for $23,705 and a Rav4 for $25,233, for use by its public safety department.
