East Williston, Merillon victorious

The 2013 Williston Park Mayors Trophy Tournament began this week, with six teams of nine and 10 year olds from area Little League competing for the top spot. 

In Game 1, East Williston held off a valiant comeback by Massapequa Coastal, and earned a hard-fought 7-6 victory Saturday at Kelleher Field. 

Behind the pitching of Tyler Burke, East Williston took a two-run lead into the top of the third when battled back to Massapequa tied the game, 2-2. East Williston responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. 

Massapequa answered with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull within one. East Williston pitcher Franky Asaro, however, would let them no closer and managed to seal the victory. 

The win advances East Williston to take on Manhasset. Burke was named Player of the Game. 

In Game 2, Merillon defeated Williston Park, 5-3, with all the runs by both teams being scored in the seventh inning. 

Williston Park’s Dylan Hasse and Jake David kept the Merillon  bats at bay, combining for close to 90 pitches and no runs allowed. Merillon’s staff was solid behind the throwing of Vincent Montoni and Christopher Piccirillo, who shutout their opponents, combing for more than 65 pitches. 

Merillon scored five times in the top of the seventh and Williston Park answered with three in the bottom of the stanza before Franco Dimilta came on in relief to shut the door. Dimilta was named Player of the Game.

Merillon is next slated to play Albertson, while Williston Park awaits their next opponent and is scheduled to take the field Saturday at 7 p.m. 

In Williston Park’s version of the Home Run Derby, East Williston’s Tyler Burke  was crowned king, smashing three round-trippers in the second round to earn the title. Burke managed two home runs in the first round, behind teammate Marco Ali’s three. Matt McCleary (East Williston), Conor McCreary (Williston Park) and David Cabrera (Williston Park) each had one home run apiece. McCleary and Ali both managed just one home run each in the final round, clearing the way for Burke’s come-from-behind victory.
