Ex-NYPD cop sworn in to Floral Park Police Department

Former NYPD officer Jonathan Russo was sworn in as a Floral Park police officer on Tuesday during a Board of Trustees meeting.

“We are very proud to have you join us,” Floral Park Mayor Thomas Tweedy said.

Russo, who has spent his life in Floral Park said he is excited for the opportunity to serve his home town.

“I’m very happy,” he said. “I’m born and raised here.”

Deputy Mayor James Rhatigan said that in the past month there has been a positive trend in the amount of violent crime and property crime.

“Floral Park is amongst the safest communities in the state,” he said.

Resident Elaine Licari agreed, stating “I have never seen such dedication. Floral Park is just exceptional.”

Tweedy concluded the meeting by acknowledging 12 Floral Park police officers who attended the funerals of slain NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos.

“I was very proud of their actions,” he said.
