Firecats beat Albertson twice

The New Hyde Park Girls U10 Firecats won two games against Albertson this weekend.

The first game was a division one matchup in the Long Island Junior Soccer League. It was a defensive battle with the Firecats defense led by Lauren Wasserman, Stephanie Zovich, Jasmine Kamdar and goalkeeper Joanna Mauceri holding Albertson to a 0-0 score at halftime.

The Firecats turned it on in the second half with Irene Tsahas and Paulina Valentine playing a strong midfield getting the ball up the field to Emily Rose, Logan Ward, Jillian Cooper, Marina Pappas, and Madeline Slaski.

Logan Ward scored the only goal of the game, putting the ball in the net on a penalty kick late in the second half, and putting the Firecats up 1-0 for the win.

Sunday saw a rematch against Albertson, this time in the quarterfinals of the New York Cup Tournament.

The Firecats came out strong from the start with an early goal by Jillian Cooper off a crossing pass from Emily Rose.

Paulina Valentine put New Hyde Park up 2-0 off a corner kick from Logan Ward. The third goal was a solo shot by Emily Rose, putting the ball in the back of the net after a carrying the ball up the field herself.

Joana Mauceri provided outstanding goal keeping, and with the help of defensive stars Wasserman, Zovich and Jasmine Kamdar, shut down the Albertson attack and kept the score 3-0 at the half.

The girls didn’t lose any momentum after halftime with a quick score by Ward off a crossing pass from Madeline Slaski.

After providing outstanding goalkeeping in the opening minutes of the second half, Pappas put the girls up 5-0 with a shot past the Albertson goalkeeper off a perfect ball from Irene Tsahas. Cooper handled the goalkeeping for the final minutes of the game shutting out the team from Albertson 5-0.

New Hyde Park now advances to the semifinal round of the New York Cup to be played on June 5 at the Northport Soccer Park.
